Vertical Jumping Requires Explosive Training
Improving your vertical is all about training your fast-twitch muscle fibres. There are several exercises you can do to train these and we’ll be discussing that in another post.
For now we want to make it absolutely clear that increasing your vertical jump will require a combination of strength and speed – endurance has nothing to do with it.
If you’re working out at the moment and doing anything over 15 reps or anything where you’re pacing yourself then you could be going in the wrong direction and having a negative affect on your jumping.
You need to have explosion in your training otherwise you are training your muscles for endurance. Try taking your reps down and the intensity of your training up – that’s what’s required to teach your muscles to respond explosively and that’s what’s going to make you jump higher.
A 100 yard sprinter will not train by running 5 miles every morning, they will train their muscles for explosion off the blocks and a short spurt of energy – that’s exactly what you need to be doing.
Hopefully this makes sense and you can adjust your vertical jump training accordingly.
